The coach of Barcelona, Xavi Hernandez, has emphasized that he spoke at the beginning of the summer with Gerard Pique about his role in the team this season.
The experienced centre-back has not played a single minute in La Liga Santander so far, as Xavi does not consider his former team-mate to be an undisputed starter.
“I spoke to Gerard before we went on holiday,” said Xavi.
“I was clear. I told him that we would strengthen the defense and that it would not be easy for him. He can help us in a different kind of role. There is competition for everyone. I try to pick the best to win the matches. It depends on his feelings and mine and how he competes when given the opportunity.”
Following the signing of Jules Kounde on Saturday, Xavi reiterated Barcelona’s intention to further strengthen their defense with the signing of a right-back.
