The German women’s national team have dropped their second Olympic group stage fixture against the women’s record champion USWNT. The record Olympic and world champion USA now sit atop the group on six points. The DFB-Frauen – courtesy of Australia’s victory over Zambia earlier today – are now tied with the Aussies for the second automatic advancement slot. The Germans will face Zambia whilst Australia face the Americans in a simultaneous kickoff at 19:00 on Wednesday. All four teams in the group are technically still alive heading into the final match-day. Eight of the teams in this twelve-nation tournament will advance to the knockouts. Hrubesch’s side can still hope for a quarterfinal berth.
