Maguire: Our defense didn’t line up

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The captain is yet to find the same chemistry with his new defensive partner

Harry Maguire has admitted he failed to get on the same line with his new defensive partner Lisandro Martinez during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Sunday in the first game of the season. The Swans benefited from some defensive errors which saw them lead 2-0 thanks to goals from Pascal Gross.

United improved their play in the second half and managed to score in the 22nd minute, although it could be called a dubious own goal by Mac Allister, as he was suspected of handball and a foul on the Brighton players.

Brighton have never won at Old Trafford before Erik ten Haag was in charge of the Red Devils, who started his career at the start of the season with a defeat.

“It’s something we have to address or it will happen again. The first goal was a big blow to our XI,” Maguire told Sky Sports after the match.

“It is good that we have Lisandro Martinez in the club. We are competing for places in defense. We haven’t played much together and in the first period we weren’t on the same defensive line. “The defenders have to have a partnership all the time and we will be better by winning games without conceding a goal.”

“Everyone knows their duties. We have had a very bad season. We have a new manager who is trying to apply his philosophy to the team but if we don’t do it right then we have a very open defense.
